Effective Communication Is The Key To Growing Your Practice

Effective communication is the cornerstone of a healthy practice and good patient outcomes. Remember that good communication goes both ways. While we normally think more along the lines of how we express ourselves and our ideas, good communication also involves being a good listener. That’s especially important for private practice owners. Effectively communicating with your patients determines:

  • Whether or not a patient will actually come back to you for treatment after the initial consultation
  • Your ability to properly diagnose the patient’s problem
  • Whether or not you can determine if the patient will actually follow advice

Good communication skills build patient trust. If the patient feels that you’re genuinely listening to them, they feel like you’re really working in their best interests.

Poor Communication Can Destroy The Doctor/Patient Relationship

On the other hand, if you communicate poorly with your patients (i.e., lecture instead of listen, fail to explain care in a way that your patient can understand, don’t address patient concerns openly, etc.), the doctor/patient relationship may suffer irreparable damage. You don’t get more than one chance to truly build trust with your patients.

Design your client communications with the end result of open dialogue and mutual trust in mind. Approach your patients like you would any partnership, with respect, commitment and make sure you stay on the same page with the end result of treatment foremost in both your minds.

How Do You Create A Strong Dialogue With Patients?

Treat creating effective patient communication as a step by step process. This is another by-product of living and practicing by design. Know what you want to achieve from the very beginning. Think of the process along these lines:

First Impressions

As with any other initial meeting, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Start with a warm greeting and treat the patient like a personal friend. Check your own attitude or mindset before you enter the treatment room and think about how you can best serve the patient.

Initial Consult

Your initial consultation with a patient will set the tone for the entire relationship. Really make an effort to connect with the patient and listen carefully to what they tell you about their current problems. Ask questions in a way that encourages them to give you more information.

Designing Treatment

After you start treating the patient, communicate with them as thoroughly as possible. Pay attention to body language and attitude. The patient may be unhappy but not forthcoming about their complaints. If you really pay attention, you may be able to address their concerns and begin to help them.

Final Thoughts

At the end of any active care plan, it is vital to communicate with your patient about the success or failure of all portions of the treatment protocol. This is an especially important time to listen to the patient. Don’t just railroad them into agreeing with your perception of how the treatment went. Pause and let them get a word in where they need to. Then learn from this and add appropriate changes to your private practice.

Following these communication guidelines will help you build patient trust and build your successful doctors rapport at the same time. Your stiffest competition is doubt on the part of your patients. Learning to effectively communicate with current and prospective patients will help you design effective marketing programs and address concerns before they become problems.

Time You Redesigned Your Private Practice?

It is so important to continue to grow, develop, and change the key elements, which make private practice successful. But beyond that there is a whole lot more to today’s private practice.

Of course some of these things never change. And that includes always being an excellent clinician first. Putting your patient’s needs above all others is so essential yet too often ignored.

Here’s one thing that too many long in private practice ignore: your skill sets always need to be kept ahead of the curve.

And the skill sets today of any private practice owner must include an extensive knowledge of both on and off-line marketing and social media especially right now with some long term players having moved to censorship and extremism.

In this world especially with all the changes thrust upon healthcare, it is so important that you continually keep your finger on the pulse of what your patients are thinking, what they are looking for, and how you can best serve them.

Of course all this demands you have excellent systems in place.

If you don’t already have a space in your practice dedicated to consuming the feedback comments and requests from your patients and perspective patients there is no way you can develop a powerful private practice moving forward.

The world right now is just so complex. There is just so much information out there that unless you stand out immediately as attentive and unique the chances of your prospective patients selecting another practice is huge!

If you ignore these key business skills then it won’t be long before you competitors literally run you out of town.

The world is changing extraordinarily fast now – change that used to take 10 years now happen in 90 days. And that’s no joke.

Discipline weighs ounces, regret weighs tons. The title of today’s article is one of my favorite quotes from the since passed business great Jim Rohn. I was very fortunate to be exposed to Jim very early on in my career. His teachings and philosophy have had a profound impact on my private life as well.

Being in healthcare today requires a tremendous expenditure of emotional, financial and spiritual energy.

Not everybody can do what you do. It does take tremendous discipline. But the pay off is huge in so many ways.

The private practice of health care today requires a tremendous expenditure of emotional, financial and spiritual energy.

Jim’s advice for all private practice owners is eternally profound. If you do not own any Jim’s recordings and books, I strongly suggest you make the investment.

What I learned from Jim about discipline, I’ve also seen in practice on a daily basis over many years. We see this with patients, but most especially now as a we see this daily with many more private practice owners.

Another of Jim’s famous sayings that holds true more than ever is “Don’t wish things were easier, wish YOU were better!”

So why the concern about this information today? Quite frankly we are living in a dumbed down world.

If you’re going to be successful in private practice and really move forward in any area of your life you must insulate yourself from the “crap” of the outside world.

So I suggest you limit your exposure to the mainstream media, talk radio, and the naysayers of doom and gloom. As a private practice owner, you are already at the top of the stack of serving humanity.

Make sure your intentions all aligned with your actions. Make sure you set measurable targets for yourself.

Above all, make sure your private practice is engaged in markets which will flourish moving forward, despite regulatory, and government interference.

Vow not to bail.

Never forget your major purpose as a private practice owner.

And that purpose is to continually be serving sick and suffering humanity with better ways every day!

Building a Fortress around your Private Practice: Part 2

The last time I talked about some of the important strategies that we can utilize every day to build a fortress around our private practices. But what I’d like to do today is address a bigger issue: our patient’s health and well-being.

Too often the theme from “practice consultants” has been, “just put this system in place and make a ton of money”.

All of us here understand our that when our only major concern is helping the patient in front of us get and then stay well, we’ll never have to worry about money ever again. This, of course, should be driving force behind everything we do every day.

Referrals will take care of themselves and we become as busy as we want to be!

The reality is that we deserve to be financially successful. To do this effectively, communications, marketing, and, indeed, every system, must convey our personal intention to help our patients get—and then stay—well.

Everyone in your practice, from your staff to your fellow referral professionals, must completely understand that this is our purpose!

But you’ll never be able to pull this off unless you are focused on the realities of your own future, and, at the same time providing excellent, cutting-edge care.

And I respectfully submit that for those of us in medicine today this is the management of chronic pain, disease, and illness in a way that supports the active lifestyle so many people today demand.

The reality is drug-only therapy will not accomplish this.

So get creative! What are your really good at and enjoy the most in practice? This is exactly what you should be doing more of every day!

Unless you differentiate yourself in this manner, you’ll end up burned out, broke, and like too many of those who venture into private practice, unable to even repay your student loans.

Harsh language? You bet!

One the biggest things to understand about private practice ownership is that patients have self-selected their pathway to your door.

The single most important thing in your private practice is you—your skills, your bedside manner, and everything you bring to the treatment table.

But, more than that, patients return to you because you meet a fundamental emotional need.

To think otherwise is pure folly. No Room for Error

There really is no room for error in healthcare today, especially in private practice. But there is plenty of need for crystal clear focus!

Today though let’s talk about one of the most commonly-ignored growth and personal satisfaction strategies as private practice owners.
That is, “surveying” your existing and prospective patients.

Once upon a time, private healthcare was called “elective” health care. That is, care which patients seek out to improve a chronic condition or the general quality of their life—but not necessarily considered essential. You can probably think of many more applications of the term essential if you have spent any time in the public sector.

Now, of course, the situation has changed so the most viable private practice includes optional procedures, systems and services which are elective, but may also be unavailable in the public sector.

The most important thing to your practice success is that your patient now considers what you do for them essential. This could include things like comfort and cosmetic treatments. It also includes the relief of chronic conditions, without invasive procedures.

This truly affords the private practice owner a huge opportunity for practice growth. Yes even right now!

I hope you see where I am going here. By accurately surveying the desires of your practice, it is much more rewarding to implement the exact systems, services, procedures and possibly other health related pieces your patients are actually looking for.

Surveying patients regularly, and then testing with action will help enhance and improve your services tremendously by adding the added factors of comfort and relaxation.

It’s no secret

It’s no secret. I’m a play junkie. If I don’t go outside and play, regularly, I get cranky, stale. Daily work becomes harder, stiffer, less fluid. You probably are the same. But maybe it’s been far too long since you let yourself find out.

We’ll here’s a whole new reason to go play.

People love it! No Kidding. Play, travel and just getting out and doing something you love makes you real, keeps you pleasantly conversant, and someone they really want to emulate.

The problem is for too many who practice we become far too rigid in daily and especially weekly routines.

Over achievers like health care professionals put their inner child last. In fact, we are some of the most under-recreated people ever. Big mistake. Illness, divorce, depression are far too often the price.

Now, I am giving you a whole new reason to disconnect, and kick up your heels! Regularly.

It will help you build an enormous practice! Why? Because you can use your play to market yourself while feeling more rested, creative and inspired to be your very best.

Yes, that’s right! Especially now a days while it’s so easy to create media. Web Cams, iPhones, you name it.

I still remember years back when we sent out a reminder card to patients. I uploaded an image of me sitting on my motorcycle with a caption “Time to ride on in?”

Patients loved it, and it was one of the most effective recall pieces I have ever done. Keeping lots of fun photos of my adventures and likes around the office for them to see too was always a big hit.

Here is a strategy any practice owner can use. Do this right, your practice grows, as does your wealth account.

Step 1-
Make sure your practice is set up around your life, NOT the other way around! What do you like to do outside of practice? Where do you want to live, travel to or experience? If it’s been a while since you’ve done this, take your time, and be honest with yourself. Be sure to write or dictate all of this.

Step 2-
Start recording snippets of your adventures in media- a smart phone is ideal because you can take decent photos, video, heck even record great conversational sound bites. Of course, it’s even better with a good camera.

Be sure to keep these devices handy all the time. Some of my best marketing pieces and images have come from weekend ski or motorcycle adventures, and of course my vacations. The more impromptu the picture or video the better.

Next, Make storage and organization of your files easy.

Step 3-
Be sure to use this material creatively. Put photos in your office news, flyers and especially on the web. This is why Facebook and other social media can be so powerful. It helps make you a real person.

Step 4-
Get some help. Too often, there is no solid marketing strategy, steps to follow or calendar for team members to focus on.

You’ll do far better to have a staff person help you with the implementation, but you’ve got to have a strategic plan they can follow. This is one of the very first things we teach in our Platinum sessions.

Step 5-
Carve out regular time to make sure you are living your dreams, and your practice is supporting it! This is crucial. It’s also why administrative and creative time must be on YOUR checklist, every week, and if you really want to accelerate your personal growth, every day!

This is living and practicing by design, not default (which gets stressful and ugly quickly).

What Do You Stand For?

It has been said, that “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything”.

To be truly independent, on this great day of American Independence you need to know where you stand on the major cornerstones of your life (Personal, Spiritual, Material, Fitness and Financial).

A strong personal philosophy on each of these is vital to your success, and developing an evolving professional life and practice .

This is a great day to ask yourself if are truly living the personal and professional life you deserve.

Are your actions leading you in the direction of the goals you set at the beginning of the year?

If not, make the midyear corrections NOW to insure not another precious moment of your life is wasted! (This is one place where one on one consulting can really help this to take shape for you!)

When I think and read about what our American forefathers accomplished, (while spending the Fourth steeped in American History), especially in light of the challenges they faced, most of the tasks we have at hand seem to pale in comparison. (I firmly believe this is also why America needs to continue to be clear on what we stand for!)

What do you stand for? Make sure your patients and your staff know your personal philosophy on these vital cornerstones or you are liable to ‘fall for anything’!

If you are not crystal clear on your personal philosophy, or even if it needs some updating or fine tuning, get out a blank legal pad, sit in a quit place, close your eyes for a while and list what comes to mind. Just make sure you do it before you go to sleep tonight!

All successful people can clearly define their stand.

You must count yourself in these ranks.

What Defines Power?

Now you might ask, what defines power? I define it as really living the life of one’s dreams.

Despite fear. Despite the economy. Despite sometimes insurmountable odds.

And with every powerful person I’ve had the pleasure of  working with along the way, they all have experienced what I call  “The Critical Event”.

And that Critical Event is simply the decision point out of which issues a bold VISION and then DESIGN.

Or very often it’s a redesign of their path in life.

But far too often, this is where even highly educated professionals like us get hung up.

Too many continue to accept “fate”, and never allow the time, make the space in their busy days or give themselves the “permission” to make it to their decision points.

And life continues to reward in kind.

If you are really living your dreams think, go back to your decision points along the way. Congratulate yourself as you move forward.

But if you are not feeling powerful, be sure to begin the process of visualization then design every day, starting today!

Always, live and practice by design, not default!

Life IS Brief

For those that spend any time in an ER or as an EMT, you see life is brief everyday. Back in our nice clean offices though, in private practice we are sometimes shielded from harsh realities.Two stories, both true, touched my life last week. Alex, age 48 dies suddenly and unexpectedly in the ER. Previously healthy, hypertensive was looking forward to his early retirement. Always had a smile, and pleasant greeting for everyone he met.

Gary, age 45, is sitting in his truck at a stop light. Gets a sudden blinding headache, throws the truck into park, clutches his dog, and according to the ME, is unconscious in 15 seconds, and a short time later dead of a cerebral aneurysm. He was a self made, financially independent, fun loving guy, still very much in love with his life and friends. Wiped out in 15 seconds. 

Again, what is it that you are putting off, not confronting or handling? What might you might miss out on, if you don’t take action TODAY?

Tough question? Maybe. Easy to answer? Probably. But only if you stay brutally honest with yourself. 

Again, we suggest you take time everyday to reappraise where you are going in practice and life.

Make sure your decisions are moving you closer to ideal. And really enjoy each day.

It Just Takes Guts

Guts and determination. Powerful words. But why should they be used in the same vein as healthcare? Because of the world we now live and practice in it just takes guts to say what you believe is best for a patient, on so many levels.

It takes guts to say what you believe is best for a patient, on so many levels.

It takes guts to buck the status quo with our patients and their families, to tell them the newest designer drug is not going to cure their obesity or poor health habits.

Contrary to the incessant drug company advertising, life will never be all be flowers, endless orgasms, smiles and happy fields of dreams due to the newest ED med or antidepressant, if patients don’t make some critical life choices for themselves.

It takes guts to tell it like it is, to really separate the valid life advice from the endless barrage of crap hurled at patients day after day.

This however, I believe can be the only true way out for all doctors in private practice today. And a big win.

For everybody.

Society will win. Not all of it, of course but much bigger segments.

Crisis based health care expenditures would drop like a stone if we helped to prevent, or at the least reduce the complications from heart and vascular disease, depression and chronic back pain, diabetes to name only a few were to decrease even just a little.

And doctor, if you are in alignment with my philosophy, continuously developing your perfect practice, you are already well on the way to making this a reality.

And what happens if we all practice this way?

Once again physicians of all disciplines become the real decision makers. We decide collectively to continue to be teachers, and leaders by example. Refuse to cave to third party based interests and administer only to the patient’s needs first. Not the insurance companies, drug companies or hospitals.

To truly stay Commanders of Change™ will takes guts.

Simply, just being good doctors first, one patient at a time, regardless of which initials you have at the end of your name.

But, to do this for any period of time requires very powerful support systems behind you. It can be stressful, unfulfilling and eat you up otherwise.

First of all, your beliefs (guts and determination) and personal lifestyle. Beliefs about what constitutes true health, self-reliance, responsibility and dependency.

And money. What is your care and advice really worth? Do your fees reflect this?

Secondly, a staff who supports your vision.

Lastly, powerful and extraordinarily effective systems and technology.

But doctor, none of this can ever work without a powerful philosophy that you can communicate.

Patients must know what your about. They need to feel it. I’m not saying you should be flamboyant or radical.

In fact, this turns way too many away from you whom might otherwise benefit from your care. But I am saying you must clearly stand up for what you believe.

Never forcing, but presenting, supporting and helping those patients and staff who can align with your purpose and vision.

And gently getting the rest out of your life.

It just takes guts.

But, here is the reward. In the long run, you will be much happier, more prosperous and healthier yourself. You will help tons more people. Have a much broader reach.

And patients, and indeed entire communities who are wanting to personally pay to see only you.

Yes, even in today’s world.

Back-Up Systems, Sea Tow and Your Practice

I Hope you had a great weekend, doing at least some time with whatever it is makes you feel great. One day not that long ago for me though was all about back-up systems, just like we need right now in practice!

It is just so important to be mentally rested to be on top of your game in the office, not to mention for all the other responsibilities you share too. This of course is a key to living by design. To practice hard, I passionately believe docs need to play hard.

So, on this end, after a terribly busy week, Thursday night I get fishing invitation from a close friend, now retired from practice about 3 years. So, I spent an hour prepping tackle that night and then head for the Cape (Cape Cod).

Something about gorgeous spring days and boats that really gets me going. Just love the wide openness and quiet, really helps clear my head.

Anyhow, I slept like a baby, got up not crazy early this time and headed out with visions of incredible spring fishing.

But alas, the universe had other plans, and Jim and I find ourselves alone for 3 hours as we await Sea Tow. Now, this really could have turned out very badly. We had been a couple miles offshore before we headed up-river, where the boat just dies. Nothing. No power, ignition, and controls dead. The freaky part is we drifted onto a dock we were able to tie up to. If it had been a half hour earlier…well, probably would have been calling the Coast Guard.
This time, we were lucky, but also prepared. Plenty of clothes, radios, EPIRB, cell phones, and up to date Sea Tow Memberships.

So, here is my takeaway. A powerful practice and adventures that serve you while helping you serve humanity is not about risk avoidance, but risk management. You see it takes risks to grow, and learn in practice, and all of life. It is risky getting out of comfort zones.

Just like when you first put your hands on a patient as a student, that first office patient has an adverse reaction, you get a subpoena, whatever else comes your way, sometimes practice can be a very scary too.

But when there are systems to fall back on, redundancy, back-ups, safety nets in place, and someone to call when you are totally stuck, or need a “tow”, you’ll sleep much better, and operate at a much higher efficiency too!

Private Practice Systems

The most important of all Private Practice Systems is…can you guess?

Answering telephones by script. It is simply a mechanism to ensure two things. One is that patients are not turned off by what is said. The other is to obtain valuable information in terms of what parts of your marketing campaign are working. You have to make sure that whoever is answering the phone is ascertaining exactly how these particular people are finding you.

The second daily marketing task is to make sure that your new and returning patients are now automatically enrolled in stay in touch “sequences”. You certainly can enhance the effectiveness of autopilot marketing by making sure that you’re subdividing these patients, putting them into different groups and categories. This is now much easier with modern software.

Third, you need to make sure that referral & primary care docs and other professionals who share the care of your patients with you are being updated by you on a regular basis. It is important to have this on autopilot. In our office when the doctor finalizes an examination report, the doctor or a staff person prints it. The staff will make sure that we have indeed personally signed the professional copy. If it’s a primary care doc who I haven’t handled before or haven’t had the opportunity to meet, I will put an introductory letter in there as well.

The fourth task to continue to drive referrals to your practice is to make sure you’re always keeping your word. If you told Mrs. Smith that on this particular visit she’s going to begin rehab or have an evaluation for carpal tunnel syndrome, you have to make sure this is indeed happening.

The fifth point is to make sure that you have surrounded yourself with a team of “can do” and not “I can’t.” The worst thing that can happen to you is to have your plan stymied by somebody who is continually coming to you with, “I can’t,” or “I didn’t get to it.” Our tolerance for this behavior is virtually nonexistent.

Do you see how important all this is? Then why doesn’t every practice operate this way? Don’t let this be you. Our team can help.

Are YOU Prepared for What Lies Ahead in Private Practice? One of the harshest realities to face is that the landscape of private practice is changing, continuously! And there is no stronger lesson than what is happening in our world right now!

So how can we be better positioned after all the upheaval?

Respectfully, we get into trouble by failing to understand the systems that are necessary to operate and manage profitably a private healthcare practice. This includes HR, safety, compliance, record keeping, etc.  At the end of the day it also includes combining your best clinical skills with effective marketing that draws precisely the type of patient you desire into your private practice.

And you know what? It requires work. But once done you are the one deciding your future. That’s why private practice remains for those who are fiercely independent and refuse to bow to the status quo. We’re the ones who decided to work at least in part outside the public system.

Patients are extremely frustrated with so much of “public” healthcare and its seemingly insurmountable regulations. Often times they report surly “providers” who are trained to act like robots see them. No treatment outside a very narrow window is allowable or prescribed within these mandated systems.

That’s why it is more important than ever that you position yourself to effectively deal with these challenges now, before it’s too late.

But I caution you not to wait too long. The task that lies ahead may seem for you enormous in many respects, but not insurmountable with focus and simple but effective systems.

I believe after all the world has been though many more are finally considering opening a private practice.

If this is you, why not start today by doing a careful examination of precisely where what and how you want your life as a physician to be.

Remember, failure to plan right now, is in fact planning to fail.

Does your Private Practice have enough “Boots on the Ground”?

Does your Private Practice have enough “Boots on the Ground”?  I mean like right now even in the midst of a pandemic?

Too often, we are confronted by marketing gurus who suggest all or none web based private practice development approaches.

For those of you new in private practice, this may be a new concept. But for those of us who have been around it is a concept with which we are very familiar. During the 1980s there was a very popular book entitled “Megatrends”. The author, John Naisbitt is one of my favorite futurists.

Much like Toffler wrote about the all too often slow adaptability of humans in “Future Shock” in the 70’s, Naisbitt wrote about the ever-expanding need for “high tech-high touch”.

Naisbitts concept is really very simple. And that is in all business and life endeavors there’s no substitute for close human contact.  Indeed, the very reason social media has become so popular is because to some extent it has replaced these human interactions.

Nonetheless there is no substitute right now for a personal mailed note or better yet phone call, especially when it comes to dealing with sick and suffering humanity.

Too often, we are confronted by marketing gurus who suggest all or none web based private practice development approaches.

In our opinion and experience, this is a fatal path for modern private practices. In fact the more high-tech you introduce into your private practice, the more need is created for an equal or greater amount of human touch.

But like everything else in your private practice, unless these are tasked, and overseen, they never occur with the regularity with which they should.

So I encourage you to reach out, brainstorm with your current working staff, ask that they call, check in on and survey your patients. Find out what they like most, and what they like least about the current state of your private practice and yes the healthcare system in general.

And then go to work with these simple action steps that place you in frequent personalized regular communications and touches with your existing patients and yes your community at large!

When Something in Practice Isn’t Working

Like everyone, physicians can really stress, and too often for us it’s when something in practice isn’t working as we anticipated.

Unfortunately, it frequently turns out that finances and basic business systems are simply not working. Too often, it’s because they are never implemented.

Very few of us had the opportunity to study with successful mentors before we opened our doors. Worse yet, is the private practice owner who thinks they must be a slave to third parties, work like a dog, and settle for pennies on the dollar.

Too often, instructors and colleges fail our students by not providing at least the basics of business, personal finances and marketing.

This has led far too many physicians today to struggle, where struggle is not necessary. For sure it’s a big reason so many doc’s have gone corporate 100%.

One thing is for sure though. In unsuccessful private practices many never take the time to identify who their ideal patient is. They simply continue to market and position themselves like everybody else in their town and profession and wonder why they go home exhausted, and broke.

In public health care of which I believe we all should contribute by the way, that may be our chosen role, but in your private practice you still have a choice.

You can specialize. You can seek out clients who desire only what you have to offer. These patients are searching for your skill sets and quite honestly your professional relationship building.

They are also searching for a warm welcoming private practice staff like so many of them grew up with.

What this requires however is a totally different perspective. An option that honestly, I think we owe our trainees and younger physicians.

The Most Dangerous Number

One of the biggest issues I observed this past week especially has been the ignoring “The Most Dangerous Number” – ONE!

One way to help a condition…

One way to manage a team…

One way for patients to pay…

And the most dangerous to professional longevity?

Having just ONE way to practice, or worse, thinking ONE strategy will work all by itself!

This is no more apparent than with websites or social media. These are all great tools, but setting them up and then expecting ONE to deliver all by itself is pure delusion.

You see, websites especially require “traffic”, web visitors you direct there by multiple methods. Here’s just a few sources of website traffic to think of as you start your week…postcards, newsletters, recall campaigns, Twitter, Facebook, AdWords, Newspaper, radio, TV…how big is your list?

This is how you need to be thinking of orchestrating your message with frequency (at least something every day) and relevancy, not BS patients can see right through…

Steve Jobs and You

When Steve Jobs left earth, perhaps the greatest technological visionary of our times,
maybe even in modern history passed.

His impact has been profound.

But why?

Simply, he created his own realities, and thus has shaped yours too!

Steve Jobs Impacted Your Daily Life in Profound Ways…

Steve Jobs relentlessly pursued Star Trek like visions, and then actually executed the development, construction and ultimately the myriad of applications using devices and tools Buck Rogers, Gene Rodenberry, Ray Bradbury and the like could only dream about.

He was a powerful CEO, building incredible teams that never lost their vision.

But what he did best, was actually DESIGN the future! By conscious choice.

And so it is with us.

I for one am glad I got to see in my lifetime how powerful one person can be.

The Writing on the Private Practice Wall

”You keep talking about all the changes in Private Practice. What do you mean, and what’s happening?”

What I thought I would do today is summarize how changes during the last decade have impacted doctor’s behaviors and decisions we all must consider in private practice.

Don’t read any further if you want sugarcoated op-ed. This is not it.

The most striking thing we advocated many years before it was trendy was that unless you the OWNER clearly handle patient finances (no, it’s not like the ER), patients are gone, especially in the scared and frightening media driven economics for so many of those we serve.

In essence, we need to be crystal clear, and also priced for the realities of our own future!

Also ask yourself if you serving humanity to the best of your abilities, and at the same time offering options to those who want and will gladly pay for them? Not everyone wants or needs a Rolls Royce, but they still make and sell plenty of them.

Patients are no different, when unique or more personalized service is needed. And wanted. Help give them their health back, teach them how to maintain it, and it’s the greatest gift ever. Literally, they get their lives back!

These are the harsh realities of practice today. It’s not the latest “let’s see what I can max on an insurance case” still advocated by some. Unless of course you like audits and recovery efforts by insurance carriers.

The next big error is not staying in close, regular contact with past patients, and all your referral colleagues. Especially when the revenues dip. Some costs rise, and you could, like many foolish businesses cancel marketing expenditures.  You may erroneously ration to stop marketing to those who have seen you before and refer to you every month, because it might cost you 1000-2000$/month to do so. Just ask your next new patient where they found out about you, and you’ll quickly see what I mean.

We suggest fully developing and integrating EMR and data management systems into autopilot style marketing with regular patient reminders, recall letters and even birthday messages and letters if you choose.

And what about your current staffing and HR Systems? Have you made these as bullet proof and compliant as possible? Are you continuing to staff private practice or group like you are the UAW? I guarantee, no one’s going to be there to bail you out. Don’t get me wrong. Excellent staff that help drive the practice are worth every dollar. But are you sacrificing your own future by not handling poor training and possibly willful non-compliance?

Finally change is perpetual. Medicine as a business is no different.

As it should be in your practice too, the strong will thrive and prosper.

But it so often takes a fresh set of management, operational and marketing perspectives. Why not let this be you?
